Your child will be participating in the Accelerated Reading Program at Howard School this year. Accelerated Reading is a computer-based reading motivation program.
This is how Accelerated Reader works...
1. Your child selects a book from the Accelerated Reader book list. These books are marked in the Howard School Library with a colored circle on the binding. Books from the book list are also available from the Howard Township Library or the Niles Community Library (depending upon where you live).
2. Your child reads the book at his or her own pace. There are a large variety of books available so there should be something for every student to enjoy.
3. Your child takes a 5-10 question multiple choice comprehension test on the computer. The computer immediately tells your child how many questions were answered correctly and provides answers for the missed questions. Points are then awarded based on the book's point value and the number of questions answered correctly. Passing the test indicates your child has really read and understands the book.
We at Howard School hope that the Accelerated Reader will be enjoyable for all students. Your child's teacher and I will be working together. Feel free to contact me directly at school with any questions you may have. We are also looking for volunteers to help with the A.R. program. If this interests you, please let me know via email at firstname.lastname@example.org. Include your name, your child's name, and your phone number.
