May 1, 2015
All students have been taking the NWEA tests in reading and math again. After they take the tests this month, we will be able to see the academic growth that each student made this school year. In addition to the NWEA tests taken on the computer, students in kindergarten through fifth grade will take a DIBELS assessment. This assessment was also administered during the months of September and January. In kindergarten and first grade, the DIBELS assessment helps determine a student's readiness for reading. In grades 2 through 5, the DIBELS indicates how fluent a student is at reading. Please encourage your child to do their very best on these assessments. We will be sharing the results with you at the end of the year.
Ballard Reward Store
The last days the Ballard Reward Store will be open this school year are Thursday, May 14 and Friday, May 15. Students continue to have the opportunity daily to earn “Ballard Bucks” by displaying outstanding behavior and working hard at school. Some students have saved their “Ballard Bucks” for big ticket items such as a movie at the Wonderland or a Pool Party at the YMCA.
The students will not be able to save “Ballard Bucks” to use next year. Students who have been saving all year long for a 130 “buck” item and have bought nothing else this school year will be able to purchase a 130 “buck” item if they have 120 “bucks” by the last open store date. In addition, any student with 70 “bucks” will be able to purchase a 75 “buck” item if he/she hasn't bought more than one item this school year. If you have questions or concerns regarding “Ballard Bucks” or the Ballard Reward Store, please contact Mrs. Schneider.
Spring Music Concert
All 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students will perform their Spring Music Concert on Wednesday, May 13 at Ballard Elementary School. It is important to Mr. Gruver to have all music students attend. Parents, please check your child’s sports schedule now and arrange for that night off. To accommodate our many parents and visitors, the 3rd grade will perform their concert at 6:30PM. The 4th and 5th grades will perform their concert at 7:15PM. All students have a more detailed itinerary in their Friday folders this week.
Dress Code Reminders
With warmer weather approaching we would like to remind you of our Dress Code at Ballard. Tops with spaghetti straps, mesh shirts, bare midriffs, short shorts and skirts, and significantly altered or torn clothing are not allowed. Sleeveless shirts or blouses with large armholes (muscle shirts) may not be worn unless another garment is worn underneath. Open toed shoes and flip-flops are discouraged due to playing on the playground at lunch. Many toes have been injured due to inappropriate shoes being worn to school. You may refer to our student/parent handbook for more information on our Dress Code. Also, Mr. Zdziebko wants to remind students to dress appropriately on gym days to go outside as they may be running, so all students should wear tennis shoes to gym class.Medications at School
If there is medication in the office for your child, please make sure to pick that up in the office by the last day of school. Or, call the office to make other arrangements. Inhalers and non-prescription items (Tylenol or cremes) can be sent home with your student in their backpack.
Kindergarten Registration/Hearing & Vision Testing
Kindergarten registration is now open at all elementary schools for next year. To be eligible for kindergarten, children must be five years old on or before September 1, 2015. Parents must provide an official birth certificate, proof of residency, up-to-date immunization record, and proof of vision and hearing screening. If you have a kindergarten student that hasn't been enrolled yet for the upcoming year, you may stop in at the office to fill out an enrollment form (please bring the above mentioned items with you at that time). We will accept applications through Friday, June 5th.
If your child needs hearing and vision screening, the Health Department is offering a free screening at Northside School on Thursday, May 7, 2015 by appointment only (for upcoming Kindergarten students). Please call Northside at 684-1544 for more information, or to set up an appointment.
Thank you to our parents for all the effort this year in helping our school with the many collections that earn our school extra funds (box tops, Martins Advantage Card, juice box recycling, etc.). Congratulations to Mrs. Christy's class for collecting the most Box Tops for the month of April, with 271. It was a very tight race this month! Mrs. Savillo's class and Mrs. Lyle's class were separated by just a few Box Tops. Keep up the great collecting. for the month of May. The class that collects the most Box Tops will receive a special treat!
