Viking Values” - positive behavior recognition

At Ballard we have implemented a new positive behavior recognition program which looks for students who have exhibited "Viking Values." Everyday one student is recognized by a staff member for going above and beyond by showing Respectful, Responsible, Safe, or Scholarly behavior and being positive role models at Ballard. Every month we will have a celebratory BRAG Breakfast for these students and one special guest from home as recognition for all their hard work and positive impact here at Ballard.

Last month the following students were recognized: Teegan Gergel, Nathan Ritter, Zaden Price, De'Mauri Dotson, Talon Brawley, Maddie Fuller, Amirah Lee, Zayne Bortz, Nicoyia Carrell, Brandon King, Lilly Sowers, and Mckayla Bock. We encourage you to discuss school expectations with your student (pg. 15 of the Ballard Student Handbook) so that he/she could be one of our next "Viking Values" students.

Spring Music Concert

All 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students will perform their Spring Music Concert on Wednesday, May 13 at Ballard Elementary School. To accommodate our many parents and visitors the 3rd grade will perform their concert at 6:30PM. The 4th and 5th grades will perform their concert at 7:15PM. All students will receive a more detailed itinerary closer to the concert date. Please direct all questions to Mr. Gruver (Ballard Music Teacher) at steve.gruver@nilesschools.org or 683-5900.

Earth Day Activities

Once again Ballard will be celebrating Earth Day the week of April 20th-24th. Each day that week we will ask students to reduce, reuse and recycle things from around the house. The following is a list of days and what we are asking students to bring in to help our school, community, and Earth: Monday-Ink Cartridges; Tuesday-Capri Juice Packs & Aluminum Cans; Wednesday is Earth Day-Newspaper & Magazines; Thursday-Cell Phones & Computers; Friday-Plastic Bags & Bottles

On Wednesday, students with Gym and Art will be out spring cleaning around the school grounds. Please be sure to have students dressed for outside clean up. Thank you for your continued support.

News from Mr. Zdziebko-Physical Education Teacher

It may be spring, but the weather can still play tricks on us. Please have your children dressed appropriately for gym class. They do need shoes they can run and play in. We are hoping the warmer temperatures will arrive so the students can go outdoors for class.

Teacher Requests for the 2015-16 School Year

If you would like to request a certain teacher for your child, we ask that you submit those requests in writing to Mr. Eichenberg by Thursday, April 30th. When requesting a teacher, we ask that you have a first and second choice request. In addition, you should state why you are choosing these two specific teachers for your students. It is important for us to have these requests sooner rather than later. Requests received after the deadline may not be granted.

Note from Mrs. Foley: Winter Boots

Local organizations donated and gifted our students boots for the winter. We are so appreciative of their generosity. Most kids are unable to wear winter boots two seasons in a row. If you know your child will outgrow these boots, and you do not need them for another child in your family, please "pay it forward" and return these boots to the school. These boots can be used by students next year.

PTO News

Ballard's Family Fun Night on Friday, March 20, was a great time for all that attended. It featured many all time favorite carnival games with a math twist! Our evening was topped off with a very funny Dollars & Sense show in the gym. Thank you to all who volunteered their time, baked goods, and came out to participate in all the fun with our staff and students.

Congratulations to Mr. Brakefield's class again for another great month of Box Tops collection. Mrs. Lyle's class came in second for the month of March and Mrs. Anton's class took third place. Thank you to everyone who clipped and sent them in for each classroom. The next Box Tops collection is on Thursday, April 16th. This will be the last collection for the four month competition. It's a close race; any class can win. Be sure to bring them all in!
The final PTO meeting for the school year will be on Thursday, May 7th in the library at 4pm. The Final Market Day pick-up is Thursday, May 28th.

Fifth Grade Oak Manor Visit

Our fifth grade students will visit Oak Manor Sixth Grade Center on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at 12:45, and return to Ballard at 2:15 pm. This will allow our fifth graders to see what they can expect next year.

Oak Manor Sixth Grade Center will be sending out a notice regarding your fifth grader's electives choices for next year. Students must select one of the following areas as a part of their specials classes next year: Band, Choir or Non-Music. Please watch for a notice to be sent home with your student and the date that it needs to be returned. This will be sent home later this month.
