Ballard Elementary is excited to offer an innovative new program for the upcoming school year aimed at increasing student engagement, leadership and achievement. Using a small-school model the STRIVE program will offer 150 first through fifth grade students a project-based learning environment focused on capturing students' interest and provoking higher level thinking. Within the STRIVE program we understand and welcome the idea that in today’s classrooms, our students have diverse backgrounds, a variety of achievement levels, and different learning styles. In order to make sure that ALL students in the STRIVE program are meeting their goals and expectations the teachers will utilize a variety of new and innovative techniques for the children to build their own understanding through real world applications and interactions with their peers.
The teachers in the Strive program become facilitators working with students to frame worthwhile questions, structuring meaningful tasks, coaching both knowledge development and social skills, and carefully assessing what students have learned from their experience. They will act as a guide, directing students when needed, but ultimately allowing students to discover in their own way. Students will understand that the STRIVE program belongs to them. They will know that the people surrounding them are their family and the classrooms they come to everyday are their homes.
Developing meaningful relationships within the program will serve as a key element in fostering the belief that every student is a role model and has the ability to develop vital leadership skills. Emphasizing inventive thinking and problem solving, students in the program will strive to be life-long learners and understand the idea that the things they are learning today will impact their lives tomorrow.
