Based on a student's English Language Proficiency, he/she may be
eligible for English as a Second Language (ESL) Services. Niles
Community Schools provides ESL supplemental instructional programs to
eligible children until they reach proficiency. These services support
regular classroom instruction and focus on the student's language and
academic needs to ensure success in school. The goal of all programs
is for students to learn English, and to meet age-appropriate academic
achievement standards for grade promotion and graduation.
To be exited from ESL services, students must test "Proficient" or
"Advanced Proficient" on Michigan's English Language Proficiency
Assessment (ELPA). Once exited, students are monitored for two years.
Students with disabilities will be provided with services in
conjunction with the services identified on his/her Individualized
Education Plan (IEP).
