What is MSDS/SDS?

Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are a method of recording the chemical content and hazards of each product we purchase for our schools. Whenever a product is ordered, it will be accompanied with such a sheet that is expected to be kept on hand in case of an emergency. This is relevant for everyone in our district from administrators to teachers to students since different products and chemicals are used in all facets of our schools.

Recently, OSHA revised the Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) to require a new sheet called SDS (Safety Data Sheet) instead of MSDS. In essence, an SDS is the same as an MSDS in that it provides information on the chemical composition of products. The SDS has been formatted to be compliant with the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) that is occurring all over the world. The data sheechem t includes information such as the properties of each chemical; the physical, health, and environmental health hazards; protective measures; and safety precautions for handling, storing, and transporting the chemical. The format for the SDS is very strict, making the information on these sheets more consistent than the MSDS. The transition from MSDS to SDS is current, and full compliance is expected by June 1, 2016.

In accordance with these new regulations, Niles Community Schools has created an online management system that can be found at:  http://niles-mi.safeschoolssds.com/
